ISO 45001 for OHSMS announced
The International Standards Organisation has announced a new project for the introduction of ISO 45001, requirements for an occupational health and safety management system. This project will be led by the BSI, the British Standards Institute, and will be based on their standard BS OHSAS 18001:2007. The project is proceeding despite the on-going objections of ILO, the International Labour Organisation, which in the past has prevented the development of an ISO standard for occupational health and safety.BSI, in proposing the new Standard, pointed out that organisations in 120 countries are certified to BS OHSAS 18001. And so they are confident that there will be significant demand for the new Standard.
The Standard will be harmonised with the ISO 9001 family of standards and will be closely aligned with ISO 14001 so as to facilitate combined audits. Waiting for the revision of ISO 14001 to progress to the DIS stage will delay progress of ISO 45001 and so the approximate publish date for this new standard is 2016.
